Dr. James van Cuylenburg (D.Psych) is the Principal Psychologist for Engage 1on1 and is also a registered Supervising Psychologist. James has a clinical caseload and supervises the professional standards of the Psychology team. He also conducts monthly professional development seminars for the team.

Engage 1on1 Psychologists have skills and experience working with clients of all ages and provide Services for Children, Adolescents, and Adults.

Engage 1on1 Psychologists collaborate in teams for specific client age groups (see below). Within these teams each Psychologist has further areas of professional interest such as identity and personal development, maternal mental health, parenting support, workplace issues, autism spectrum, and much more. Our client intake team will be happy to connect you with the best match Psychologist for your specific area of concern.

CHILDREN

Children’s mental health team

Our Children’s Team is very experienced in early intervention, social and emotional development, and identifying and working with the underlying causes of children’s mental health issues.

Therese Melhem

Therese Melhem is a clinical paediatric psychologist with depth of experience in early intervention and working with children on the Autism spectrum. Her warm and engageing approach puts children at ease straight away, and her holistic methods include parents and support structures to deliver effective outcomes in social and emotional development. Her work includes social skills groups for children with ASD.

The expertise of our Child Psychology team includes social and emotional development, parenting support, behavioural issues, Autism Spectrum Disorder, separation anxiety, and many other challenging issues, such as helping children build resilience at critical times or within difficult family dynamics.

Children transitioning to primary or secondary school

As end of year approaches children may need help preparing for primary school, or transitioning from primary to secondary school. This work with children is best started before the end of year to improve social, emotional, learning and behavioural skills in preparation for the changes ahead

All our Psychologists work with adolescents and young adults, and are very effective in helping young people to find their way in life. Our Psychologists have a wide range of skills and our client intake team can suggest a Psychologist with the best match of experience for the specific issues you need support with.

Donald Pan

Donald works with a wide range of teenagers and works particularly well with ‘non conformist’ boys struggling with identity, self image, or peer group pressure. Donald is relaxed and builds good rapport to help teenagers with positive decision making.

Women’s mental health team

Lydia Brown

Dr Lydia Brown’s research on self-compassion in women during menopause is published internationally. Lydia also lectures and conducts research at the University of Melbourne. “I have a strong clinical and research interest in adult women’s mental health. My practice is in Cognitive Therapy, and I have a special interest in mindfulness, and positive psychology, particularly self-compassion for women during times of transition, such as menopause.”

Men’s mental health team

Dr James van Cuylenburg is a warm and engaging psychologist with a gently probing style to help men get to the root cause of concerns. James helps men develop practical and effective strategies, together with new skills, for overcoming complex challenges.

Dr Greg Asher has worked at Mensline, and case managed war veterans and their families. Greg is also very experienced in work place issues, occupation rehabilitation, vocational counselling, acute stress, trauma, grief and loss.
